  • Thank you for your prayers as I prepared for this lesson and delivered it. I felt more prepared this time than last. On top of that my notes did not slow me down as they did last time. May God bless the reading and discussion of His word.

    Coronary Attacks
    A Case Study look at
    1 Samuel 3-13

Read 1 Samuel 3-13. Pay special attention to chapters 7, 8, and 12. Then answer each of the following questions. Be sure that your answers come from the passages read and not from your own mind. We are looking to discover how the Bible, specifically 1 Samuel 3-13 deals with these answers. My notes and handouts are availble for download here. They are on line in RTF documet format. To help you understand how this message fits into our ABF's Bible Study please read Matthew 5-8 (The Sermon on the Mount) and examine the heart issues Christ brings up. Please feel free to use this study as apart of your ministry, but please make a reference to my Xanga blog.

    1. What can you tell me of Israel from 1 Samuel 7, 8, and 12?

    2. Describe the heart of Israel in Chapters 7, 8, 12.

    3. What are the reasons for the differences?

    4. From reading these passages what might have been their motivations for desiring a king?

    5. How are you and I like the Elders of Israel? People? Samuel? Saul?

    6. What can we do to keep our hearts and minds focused in on the Lord?

A Case Study of Heart Failings

    1 Samuel 3-13

Well I have everything I need for our ABF Hour+. So please pray that I can deliver the material and lead the class in discussion so we can learn from the lives of Israel, Samuel, and Saul.

I will post my lesson materials later this afternoon with an update on how things went.

Please also be praying for GoatHeadAlien he is a Xanga member who has some ministry opportunities before him. Please visit his site and see how you can pray specifically for him.

  • TEACHING OPPORTUNITY TOMORROW

My sunday school has been studying the Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5-7. A couple of weeks ago I was able to teach on Matthew 6:1-18 and the class went really well. The main idea here was that we need the to have the right motivation when we serve God. Christ's sermon is an examination of our heart and he is saying from it flows who we are before God. If our heart is not right then it does not matter what our external actions say about us. But if our heart is right then we will see a non-hypocritical out flow from our hearts in to our every day lives. Our external will reflect our internal and God will be pleased.

So we have been studing how this plays out through the Sermon on the Mount. This Sunday I get to teach again. We have not yet finish this passage in Mattew, but I have been thinking and studying  about an OT passage that I think will fit well with what we are studing. Currently I am not 100% sure of how I ought to present this study, but I am thinking of using a case study approach.

Please be praying for me as I continue to pray and mediate on these passages. I ask that you pray that God will teach me through this passage and that He will use it for His glory with those to whom I teach.

    Thanks for Listening.
    Godspeed,
    Wesley

  • The Brightest Colors
    by
    Mrs. Charles E. Cowman

"It is good for me that I have been afflicted" (Ps. 119:71).

It is a remarkable circumstance that the most brilliant colors of plants are to be seen on the highest mountains, in spots that are most exposed to the wildest weather. The brightest lichens and mosses, the loveliest gems of wild flowers, abound far up on the bleak, storm-scalped peak.

One of the richest displays of organic coloring I ever beheld was near the summit of Mount Chenebettaz, a hill about 10,000 feet high, immediately above the great St. Bernard Hospice. The whole face of an extensive rock was covered with a most vivid yellow lichen which shone in the sunshine like the golden battlement of an enchanted castle.

There, in that lofty region, amid the most frowning desolation, exposed to the fiercest tempest of the sky, this lichen exhibited a glory of color such as it never showed in the sheltered valley. I have two specimens of the same lichen before me while I write these lines, one from the great St. Bernard, and the other from the wall of a Scottish castle, deeply embossed among sycamore trees; and the difference in point of form and coloring between them is most striking.

The specimen nurtured amid the wild storms of the mountain peak is of a lovely primrose hue, and is smooth in texture and complete in outline, while the specimen nurtured amid the soft airs and the delicate showers of the lowland valley is of a dim rusty hue, and is scurfy in texture, and broken in outline.

And is it not so with the Christian who is afflicted, tempest-tossed, and not comforted? Till the storms and vicissitudes of God's providence beat upon him again and again, his character appears marred and clouded; but trials clear away the obscurity, perfect the outlines of his disposition, and give brightness and blessing to his life.

Amidst my list of blessings infinite
    Stands this the foremost, that my heart has bled;
For all I bless Thee, most for the severe.

  • UPDATE on the GMail invite give away.
Since my purpose in doing this is to get to know all of you better I have decided to extend the deadline for entry submissions from today until next Saturday (Sept 25).  I hope to here how God has used you in the lives of others either directly or indirectly.
    Godspeed,
    Wesley

  •  I was thinking that one of my readers may not as of yet have a GMail* account and since I have an invite why not give it away. So I am thinking of a number between 1 and 1 Google.  Nooooo!!!! I am kidding! Not about the give away but about the number guessing. From today, Saturday, Sept 18, 2004 @ 4pm EST until Saturday, Sept 25, 2004 @ 3:59pm EST I am running a contest to give away this one GMail invite.

So what do you need to do to get this invite? Leave one post of 20 words or less telling me of your greatest ministry experience. When I say minstry I not only want to include those who are employeed in minstry postions, but also anyone who minsters to others for the glory of God. This should include all believers who profess to be born again through the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ alone (Eph 2:8-9). So tell me how God has used you to impact the lives of others for the Glory and Kingdom of God . Then I will choose a RANDOM blog post to be the winner. I have decided to use "LOTS" to choose the winner because God is a better judge than I. Once I have read all of the posts I will shortly thereafter notify the winner and leave a blog letting all know whom the winner is.

Also be on the look out for other similiar contests for GMail accounts to come.

    Godspeed,
    Wesley

    * For those of you not familiar with GMail it is Googles Version of Email. They offer 1GB (1000MB) of email storage to it's users.  Currently most email providers offer 2-10MB and some have moved to 100-250MB. The one thing Google does is show ADs on your WebMail as you view it online. The choose ADs based on the word content of your emails. So there is some type of email analyzation that occurs, but most email providers can do this already if they want to or are ordered by the Law. Even you place of buisness has the right to look at each and every email you send using the Coporate email system or the through the Coporate provided internet. So a word of caution. ALWAYS treat email as if you are sending a postcard to someone.

  • Last month I finished reading Fathering Like the Father written by Kenn and Jeff Gangel and I would recommend this book to any man to read. It was designed for fathers to help them father more biblically but as I read it the characteristics talked about in this book are needed by all men regardless of whether or not you are a father. If more men reflected these qualities of God the Father then the church and world would be a much better place for all mankind to live. God's light would shine brighter than ever through us and I believe more souls would enter the kingdom of God. I have not completely finished my study of this book yet, but in the next few days I hope to completely pull my thoughts and notes together on it so that I can allow the teachings of the Gangels to change my fathering. Here is a small list of what the first two chapters are about. If you are a father or would like to be then I recommend you read this book today.

    Chapter One - Humor

    1. Use Humor as you teach and raise your children
    2. Do not show favoritism
    3. “True joy and happiness in our families comes as we trust God’s plan and provision through everything.” (pg 19)
    4. Be with your Kids

      1. Spend time with them
      2. Enter their world. Learn first hand their joys and trials.
      3. Include them in your daily life and routines. Let them see your life is like.

    5. Play with your kids
    6. Laugh with your kids

Chapter two – Grace and Mercy

    1. Fathers must deal with the need for mercy
    2. Mercy relents from deserved punishment or consequences. Grace offers undeserved favor or benefit.
    3. God is not soft on sin, but, for his children, God desires holiness not legal perfection. Instead of getting us to “toe the line,” God prefers to bring us to the point at which we allow him to carry us along
    4. Discipline, by  nature, involves giving tender direction not harsh correction
    5. Grace and mercy must exist in balance with justice and discipline.
    6. Only mercy and grace deal with sin as God does. Instead of condemning we forgive and we help our children along the path to holiness.
